JSW Chair Professor of Innovation and Public Policy and Professor of Economics at IIM, Ahmedabad. Current teaching and research interests focus on firm strategy, innovation, entrepreneurial business models, public policy & regulation. Recent research has focused on capability building processes in industrial clusters, FDI in R&D, innovation-internalization linkages, competition policy, inter-organizational linkages for technology development (especially academia-industry relationships), strategic and policy aspects of intellectual property rights, linkages between public policy and technological change, economics of strategy, the small scale sector in India and policy issues in higher education. Sectoral focus of the research in the aforementioned areas has been on Pharmaceutical, IT, Electronics and Auto-component industries. Was a member of the Indian Prime Minister's High-Level Committee (also known as Sachar Committee) that wrote a report on the Social, Economic and Educational Conditions of Muslims in India. In continuation of this work, part of current research focuses on issues relating to Muslims, especially affirmative action in higher education. Recipient of the of the Ford Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Economics and spent two years at the Economic Growth Center, Yale University, USA as a Visiting Research Fellow. Spent a term at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (US) as a Visiting Professor. Has worked as a consultant to several international organizations like the World Bank and the UN. Widely published in national and international journals, has had an extensive international exposure through several collaborative projects, seminars and conferences. Has also delivered invited lectures in several US and European Universities including Yale, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Stanford, Berkeley, Lund and the London Business School.

Teaching

Teaching has focused on economics of firm strategy, innovation, intellectual property rights (IPRs), entrepreneurial business models, public policy & regulation.  I have taught courses relating to Economic Environment and Policy in India, Economics of Regulation, Technology Networks and Management, Economics of Strategy, Industrial Organization, Strategic Management of Intellectual Property Rights, Multinationals and the International Economy and Innovation and Technology Policy. More recently, have collaborated with faculty at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad to offer a course entitled New Technology Applications, Design and Business Models. Have also been teaching a course called Fund Management which simulates venture capital company scenarios using live deals and active seed funds at the Center for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship.

All these are offered in the regular postgraduate (MBA) programme and for the Ph.D. level programme. Some versions of these are also taught in short duration executive development programmes on knowledge management.

Areas of Research :

Recent research has focused on two broad areas: (1) Firm strategy, innovation and public policy; and (2) Conditions of marginalized groups and higher education. Within the first strand, the focus has been on linkages between public policy and technological change, capability building processes in industrial clusters, FDI in R&D, innovation-internationalization linkages, competition policy, inter-organizational linkages for technology development (especially academia-industry relationships), strategic and policy aspects of intellectual property rights, economics of strategy and small scale sector in India.  Sectoral focus of the research in the aforementioned areas has been on Pharmaceutical, IT, Electronics and Auto-component industries. The other strand of work has focuses on issues relating to Muslims and affirmative action in higher education.
