About Information Systems (IS) Area

The Information Systems (IS) was set up to respond to the need for research in computer applications in management. Starting in an environment that was largely unaware of the potential benefits of computerization (in the 1970s); IS has worked at Identifying potential applications for various levels of management; and Planning and implementing these applications.

Over the years, the group has worked with a variety of organizations, including those in government, public and private sectors. While, the group's general focus has always been on management information systems, the specific themes of its work vary depending on the changing scenario in management and information technology. The group has done research in in decision support systems, expert systems, computer aided instruction, management information systems, algorithm design, developmental informatics, software export, design of computer and network configurations, IT policy issues at international, national, state, and corporate levels, distributed computing systems including peer-to-peer systems and ad-hoc networks.

In addition to its research and consulting activities, the group offers courses in all the major programmes of the Institute, including the post graduate, fellow, and faculty development programmes. In FPM, the group is responsible for the information systems stream. Additionally, several management development programmes are offered by the group every year on topics of current interest.

Areas of Work

Decision Support Systems: IS's efforts at building DSS in organizations are a significant component of the nationwide computer aided management programme.

Public Administration: IS promotes the use of computers in public administration to facilitate effective rural development. It has been extensively involved in the district level computerization programme of the government of India.

Education and Training: IS was a pioneer in training information analysts rather than just programmers. This effort is also reflected in the specialization offered in PGP.

Centre for Telecom Policy Studies: The Centre for Telecom Policy Studies (CTPS) has been set up at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmadabad to conduct research to support policy formulation and its implementation in the telecom sector in India. The centre conducts policy studies aimed at critically characterizing and analyzing the structure and the functioning of the telecommunications sector in India.

An eight-member core project team of IIMA faculty, assisted by full-time associates employed by the centre, is working on the project. The project team is inter-disciplinary covering various disciplines such as economics, information technology, operations management, finance, organizational behavior, business policy, and operations research. The Centre has an advisory committee consisting of senior policy and decision-makers from the private sector, the government and academic institutes. The committee reviews and provides overall guidelines for the projects with the objective of making them relevant and useful to the policy making progress in the country.

Centre for Electronic Governance: The Centre for Electronic Governance has been set up at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmadabad (IIMA) with the twin objectives of identifying worthwhile applications and disseminating knowledge and skills for successful implementation of electronic governance applications amongst the bureaucracy and other stake holders. The centre is an example of a successful partnership between an academic Institute and the industry. We seek other partners in moving the "proof of concept applications" developed at the centre into the realm of actual implementation.

The Centre for Digital Transformation: The Centre for Digital Transformation does cutting-edge research studying organizational dynamics related to the development, strategy, and leadership of digital innovations. Using various conceptual frameworks that integrate theories and developments in strategy, economics, information systems, and other business disciplines, the centre examines digital transformation, emphasizing a focus on:

  • Role of Artificially intelligent (AI) technologies in organizational and societal transformation
  • Digital processes, products, platforms, and services
  • Digital channels for retail
  • Building online marketplaces and IT-enabled disintermediation
  • Digitally enabled customer participation for co-creation and co-innovation
  • Digital business strategy
  • Digital value chain innovations
  • Digitally engendered network effects
  • Digital architectures and governance models
  • Leadership in digital social networks
  • Business analytics
  • Human emotions and sentiments in the digitized world
  • Digitization and transformation of work
  • Effects of digitization on jobs, incomes, and wages
  • Neuroscientific dynamics underlying customer interactions with technology
