IIMA Legacy

Recognising newly independent India’s development needs, a group of ambitious industrialists and radical educators convinced the Planning Commission to approve a new kind of school to train expert managers. It would have a distinct pedagogy, and focus on real-world problems. This was the beginning of the IIMA.
IIMA is more than an institution of higher learning; it is a community where people of diverse cultures and nationalities live, work, and play connected by their similarities and enriched by their differences.

IIMA through History

Life at IIMA

Residential life

Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is a UNESCO World Heritage City on account of its architectural richness. Aside from medieval palaces, temples and mosques, the pols, walled neighbourhoods dating back to the 15th century, are unique. Ahmedabad takes its name from Sultan Ahmed Shah who made it the capital of his kingdom in the 15th century … but of course, no local ever says “Ahmedabad”: their city is Amdavad and they are Amdavadis. Ahmedabad has lots to see and do.

Housing

Twenty-seven dormitories accommodate more than 700 students. Comfortable, single rooms on each floor arranged around a stairway and common areas to enable those chance interactions. Apart from the dormitories, there are more than 100 houses for married students and their families. Equipped with everything that a studious mind requires to think and relax, these dorms and houses have had the most iconic names as residents

Food & Travel

Mess food scores on quality, quantity and variety which means that the monthly subscription for breakfast, lunch and dinner is definitely worth it. Other than the student mess, there are multiple eateries, cafes and chai points for those quick bites between classes. And for the health watchers, there is also a fruit vendor and a juice bar!
Getting outside the campus is a piece of cake or khandvi if you please! Autos and cabs are easily available. If you get lost, ask a local! All help will be extended

Health services for your well being

image-1For routine health issues and injuries, the campus community consults full-time residential doctors at IIMA’s on-campus dispensary. The dispensary provides basic treatment and referrals to specialists at city hospitals when needed. The campus residents fill their prescriptions and find just about any other medical supplies they need at the Planet Health store. The IIMA dispensary is located in Dorm 11.

Counselling

Through the Students' Personal and Career Development Centre IIMA offers free counselling and psychotherapy services to all registered programme participants and members of the staff and faculty. Sessions are strictly confidential unless the person’s safety or someone else’s safety is seriously at risk and even then breaking confidentiality would be discussed with the person first.

Accessibility

From infrastructure that provides easy access to students with physical disabilities to instituting committees to extend all help, the Institute has built a framework for supporting students that come from challenging backgrounds. For instance, the Vikram Sarabhai Library offers study material in Braille along with software that converts text to voice for students who are visually challenged. The Equal Opportunity Student Committee (EOSC) is a student club that has been set up to look at the welfare of students with disabilities. The Equal Opportunity Office run by staff members is another such body that undertakes welfare activities for such students. From ensuring that they have been provided accommodation as per their needs to equipping them with technological tools, IIMA is sensitive towards providing solutions to support students with special needs.

Sports & Recreation

Sports

From football that captivated the campus from the 1970s through the 1990s to state of the art sports facilities now, Sports at IIMA is entrenched in our DNA. IIMA offers a wide range of sports opportunities. The campus has a well-maintained football field, cricket ground, and courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton and squash. The Sports Complex on the New Campus has a fully equipped gym, a great community swimming pool, squash courts, a multi-purpose sports hall, yoga rooms, purpose-built spaces for indoor games, along with a café and juice bar.

The Frisbee Cult
The IIMA introduces students to many of life’s great discoveries, including Ultimate Frisbee… “Ultimate” for short. Ultimate is to the IIMA what Quidditch is to Hogwarts.
It’s a team sport with teams comprised of both men and women; it has no referee and the only rule is to pass the disc and catch it in the opponent’s end zone … but that’s leaving out all the frenzy, the strategy and the athletic skill.  It’s also an Olympic sport and many IIMA students have represented India in international Ultimate Frisbee tournaments.
When the sun goes down, the magic of Ultimate awakens, drawing students out onto the Louis Kahn Plaza to participate or to cheer.

SMILES at IIMA

While the academics and practices at IIMA are driven towards advocating and promoting responsible business practices, the IIMA community has undertaken several initiatives that stem from this very concept. From providing free lessons to children from economically weaker sections to ensuring the safety and well-being of animals in and around the campus, these initiatives are drives backed by a sensitive and passionate community comprising students, faculty and staff members.

Facilitating Education for Underprivileged Children
SMILE
As a part of its community outreach programme, IIMA alongwith the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has set up a supplementary education/resource centre called Student-Mediated Initiative for Learning to Excel or SMILE for the benefit of underprivileged students living in and around Vastrapur, where the Institute is located. Through this initiative, classes are conducted for students from Class IX to Class XII by a volunteer team from IIMA, under the guidance of the Dean (Alumni & External Relations).

PRAYAAS
Prayaas is a social initiative through which the IIMA community helps underprivileged children take their first step towards a meaningful education, a joyous childhood and a better future. Since 2003, the IIMA community has worked tirelessly to help these children get admissions in nearby public schools, provide supplementary evening classes on the Institute campus and more importantly, get the opportunity to enjoy a wholesome and happy childhood.

Safeguarding Our Furry Companions in and Around the Campus
Pawsible is a students’ special interest group for the animals of IIM Ahmedabad. A quality about the IIMA community that will strike anyone is the love and compassion that the community shares for the animals of IIMA. Pawsible is an initiative driven by compassion and love to provide animals basic facilities and some caretaking to make them a part of the community of IIMA.
