Anil Bhatt

Professor Anil Bhatt worked in the Public System Group from 22nd March 1977 to 31st May 1997.

Prof. Bhatt received his BA in both, Political Science and Sociology from MS University in Vadodara in 1958. He graduated first in his class and was the recipient of the D S Taraknath Foundation Prize. After his graduation, Prof. Bhatt joined MS University as a Research Assistant in 1959 before pursuing an MA in Political Science from the University in 1961. After a short stint as a Research Scholar in MS University, Prof. Bhatt worked with K S Arts College in Kapadvanj as a Lecturer in 1962. He also worked in the capacity of a Researcher at the National Institute of Community Development in Missourie; the Gandhian Institute of Studies in Varanasi and the Centre for Study of Developing Society in New Delhi. Prof. Bhatt left India to pursue his PhD from the University of Chicago. He was also the recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship for Graduate Studies between 1968 and 1972. On his return to India, Prof. Bhatt rejoined MS University in the department of Political Science. Here, he served in the capacity of a Reader for four years.

Prof. Bhatt contributed towards the Institute significantly in the formative years of its Public System Group. Here, he served on a number of policy making bodies and committees of importance both within and outside the Institute.

He authored several books including Caste, Class, and Politics: An Empirical Profile of Social Stratification in Modern India (1975) and Development and Social Justice: Micro Action by Weaker Sections (1989). Prof. Bhatt succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 70.

Prof. Bhatt will always be remembered as a pious gentleman of high intellectual capability coupled with the capacity for vigorous hard work.
