Harry L Hansen (Marketing)

Professor Harry Louis Hansen worked in the Marketing Area from January 1969 to May 1969.

He also functioned in the capacity of Principal Advisor to the Institute in its formative years between 1963 and 1965. Prof. Hansen headed the project as Director under which the Harvard Business School extended its assistance to IIMA in the 1960s.

Prof. Hansen was born in Manhattan and graduated from Haverford College in 1933. He received his MBA from Harvard University in 1935 and a PhD in 1939. He functioned in the capacity of a full time Professor at Harvard in 1949 and was named Harvard's first Malcolm P. McNair Professor of Marketing in 1965.

Prof. Hansen was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal from the Royal Society of Arts. He was also the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award-Harvard's highest honor.

After retiring in 1977 from his post as faculty at Harvard, Prof. Hansen headed the Institut pour l'Etude des Methodes de Direction de l'Entreprise as the Dean in Lausanne, Switzerland until 1981. This was followed by five years at the Instituto de Estudios de la Empresa in Barcelona where he was a founding member of its Advisory Committee since 1963.

His six-week trial Advanced Management Programme at Durham University in 1964 successfully resulted in the formation of the Advanced Management Programmes International Trust. Prof. Hansen held the position of Programme Director of the Trust for the next two decades. Eventually, it became part of the Oxford Centre for Management Studies, now known as Templeton College.

Prof. Hansen and Prof. Vikram Sarabhai formulated the mission of IIMA along with several others. Prof. Hansen developed the basic educational philosophy of the Institute.

A brilliant educator, administrator, and thinker, Prof. Hansen passed away at his home in Massachusetts on 3rd August 1992 after battling cancer. He was survived by his wife and two children. Prof. Hansen often said, 'He who has eyes sees everything in something.'
