G. S. Gupta, Ph. D. (Johns Hopkins), MA and BA (MS University, Baroda) is currently a Freelance Management Consultant and Visiting Professor, based in Ahmedabad. Prior to this, he was a Professor of Economics and Finance at IIM, Ahmedabad between 1970 and 2010, Dean/ Professor of Eminence at Nirma University Institute of Management and Distinguished Professor at Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Ahmedabad. His other positions include Bank of Baroda Chair Professor in International Banking and Finance at IIM, Ahmedabad, Visiting Professor (Full time) of Economics at Illinois State University for over two years, Professor at the School of Business, Universiti Sains Malaysia for over two years, Consultant at Resource Management Centre, Maryland, USA, and Lecturer of Economics at M. S. University, Baroda. His areas of specialization include Economic Theory and Policy, Econometrics and International Finance.

Prof. Gupta has authored/co-authored seven books, published over 70 articles in referred national and international (USA, Malaysia and Australia) journals, and has prepared many management cases and technical notes. He has guided and co-guided 28 doctoral dissertations (18 at IIMA, five at Gujarat university, one each at Utkal university and DD university, Nadiad and three at University Sains Malaysia); offered consulting services to many public and private enterprises including World Bank, IMF, FAO, International Cooperative Alliance, Overseas Development Authority (Sri Lanka), University Putra Malaysia, University Uttara Malaysia, RBI, ICICI, Educational Consultants India Ltd., GIDC and Govt of India; served as the Conference President for Gujarat Economic Association; and as a member in several educational institute's boards of Governors/Studies/Management/Academic Councils and editorial boards of academic journals; chaired technical sessions and presented papers and invited keynote addresses at several national and international conferences; and was an Independent Director on the Board of Directors of Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd. for ten years during April 2007-March 2017.

He has taught full courses at seven IIMs, one IIT and several other reputed business schools; and served as a visiting faculty at many training centres, including Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, RBI Bankers Training College and Bank of Baroda Training College; has served on the recruitment committees for faculty positions at many institutions and universities, including six IIMs, four IITs, and also as a member of the interview committee for Civil Services (IAS and GAS); and has served as an external examiner for over 50 Ph.D. theses of many top level institutions/universities including Delhi University, MS University Vadodara, Mumbai University, Rajasthan University, Gujarat University, two IIMs, two IITs, Dhaka University and University Science Malaysia.

Professor Gupta is well grounded in economic theory, econometrics and mathematical economics, besides a good command on banking and finance. Besides majoring in Economics, he has studied econometrics, mathematical economics, linear algebra and advanced calculus, which have proved highly complementary in being a true economist. He has been a versatile teacher and researcher, having taught a wide range of courses in economics at several prestigious institutions in India and abroad, and published papers on numerous areas in wide range of journals. His special expertise is in econometrics and micro and macro economics, and he is quite at ease in offering courses in portfolio management and international trade and finance. His research/consulting areas include monetary theory and policy, banking, industry studies, capital market and international trade and finance. His teaching and research work is overwhelmed with econometric methods and models. He is not only an economist in profession but also in his day to day life.

Dr. Gupta was awarded the University Fellowship for doctoral studies, Gold Medal for standing first in Masters' degree, National Plan Scholarship for scholastic performance in BA degree and University Merit Scholarship for top performance in SYBA. A couple of his research papers have received the Best Paper awards, two of his cases were a part of the four cases which once formed the most widely used cases from IIMA, and his books on Managerial Economics and Macro Economics have run into multiple editions and reprints and have been adopted as Text books at many institutions across the country. His teachings have received high ratings and at several programmes he was rated as the best faculty. He had the privilege of being a part of the team of monetary economists invited by the RBI Governor for solicitating opinion on the next monetary policy announcements during 1994. Also, he was a consultant to the Sukhomoy Chakravarty Committee to Review the Working of the Monetary System set up by the RBI in 1984 for which he submitted a research study report on Monetary Target Setting. He enjoys the distinction of being invited to serve IIM Ahmedabad on over a three year full-time contract even after superannuation. Currently he is having the privilege of serving on some faculty selection and promotion committees, Academic Council, Boards of Studies and Research committees, besides receiving invitations for offering courses and special lectures at some top institutions including IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore, IIM Udaipur, IIT Kharagpur and keynote addresses at national level conferences/seminars in the country.
