After a long time, three Indian institutes have featured in the top 50 global ranking, that too in a prestigious University ranking list.

Just last month PM Modi had described it as a ‘blot’ that no Indian university features in the top 500 list, and had allocated a special budget to improve Indian education system.

However, the three Indian institutes which have featured in the global top 50 ranking are all premier institutes, which are always considered the best (atleast in Asia). Absence of any other institute in the top 100 ranking is indeed alarming.

3 IIMs Feature In Top 50 Global MBA Institutes

Quacquarelli Symonds Business Masters Rankings 2018, which was released yesterday, features three IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) in their top 50 best MBA institutes.

Out of the three, two feature in the top 25 list.

While IIM-Bangalore has been listed at 22nd position, IIM-Ahmedabad is at #23 position.

Whereas IIM-Calcutta has been ranked at #46, thereby being included in the top 50 ranking.

The prestigious QS World University Rankings has placed these premier IIMs in the ‘Master of Management’ institutes category.

Meanwhile, for the category called ‘Global Business’, only IIM-Ahmedabad was ranked in the top 50, at #49. IIM-Bangalore was placed at #58 and Indian School of Business was ranked #93.

If we observe the regional ranking for ‘Global Business’, then IIM-Calcutta is ranked at #18; IIM-Ahmedabad is at #7; IIM-Bangalore at #9 and Indian School of Business at #12.

For ‘Masters in Management’, France based HEC Paris has been ranked as the #1 college, followed by London School of Business and Spain based ESADE.

For the ‘Global Business’ category, Harvard is at #1 rank, followed by France based INSEAD and HEC Paris.

For the regional ranking (Asia, Australia and New Zealand) of ‘Global Business’ category, INSEAD Singapore is at #1 position, followed by China based CEIBS and Melbourne School of Business.

Education System Improving in India?

Going by the latest QS Business Masters ranking, it seems that educational system is improving in India, but a lot needs to be done to bring the changes in the grass root level.

Last month, while giving a speech in Patna, PM Modi had lamented the fact that there are no Indian university in the top 500 list, and described it as a ‘blot’.

Although the PM didn’t specify which ranking he was talking about, but the intentions were clear: Indian needs some major educational reform.

In the previous rankings by QS, there has been no Indian university in the top 100 ranking ever, whereas Chinese institutes and colleges have been making a much stronger mark in the same ranking.

In 2015, over 25 colleges from China were in the top 100 ranking, while only two were from India in the top 200 ranking.

PM Modi has already announced a special fund of Rs 10,000 crore for the 20 best Universities in India, and hopefully, we can see some major change in the coming days.
