February 19, 2024: The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) welcomed 30 visually challenged working professionals to its unique workshop ‘Leadership and Strategic Thinking for Social Sector’, which has been carefully curated for visually challenged professionals and will be held on campus from February 19 to 21, 2024.

The programme - conceptualized by IIMA faculty member and the Dr Lal PathLabs Chair in Healthcare at IIMA Professor Rajesh Chandwani, - aims at equipping the participants with knowledge and skills that can help in grooming them to take on leadership roles. About seven other faculty members from IIMA and the Blind People’s Association (BPA) along with guest speakers with expertise in different academic areas have come together to take sessions on a wide range of subjects for the participants.

The programme commenced with the inaugural session attended by the participants, Professor Bharat Bhasker, Director, IIMA; Professor Rajesh Chandwani, Faculty Chair, Programme on Leadership and Strategic Thinking for Social Sector; Manoj Garg, Group CHRO Dr Lal Pathlabs; Govind Das, author and thought leader.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Professor Bharat Bhasker, Director, IIMA said, “IIMA has always believed in providing equal opportunity to all those who strive and deserve to progress through knowledge. I am happy to see the turnout this year for the programme, an initiative we launched last year with the sole purpose of providing an opportunity to empower professionals who' ve overcome obstacles and earned their place here through resilience, determination, and hard work. For the Institute, this programme represents the Institute’s commitment to contribute significantly to the creation of a more inclusive and equitable society.”

Keeping in mind the special requirements of the participants, IIMA faculty members are making modifications in the course content and teaching that will keep the teaching-learning process simple, student-friendly, and effective.

Reflecting on his observations of the programme, Professor Rajesh Chandwani, Faculty Chair, Programme on Leadership and Strategic Thinking for Social Sector said, “Last year we had a very successful program. The participants loved the sessions, interactions and the learnings. But importantly, it was an eye-opener for the faculty members, as well. While we were discussing overcoming self-limiting beliefs and taking multiple perspectives with the participants, we realized that we were trying to overcome our self-limiting beliefs and how to understand diverse perspectives ourselves. I think all of us experienced that we learnt a lot during the
program, not only about aspects such as self-awareness, diversity and leadership but also about how to bring inclusivity in classrooms”.

Details of the Leadership Training Programme

During the programme, participants will be taught concepts and trends in subjects ranging from focus on traditional topics but critical aspects in management such as Overcoming Self-limiting Beliefs; Understanding an Expansive Self; Governance and Compliance Issues in NGOs; and Capacity Planning and Bottleneck Analysis to contemporary aspects of management and leadership related to the current era of technology and social media. We have included topics such as AI and Technology Leadership; leading in Social Media Era and more. At the end of the training programme, the participants will not only have a greater understanding of various functions and aspects of management, including self-growth, which will equip them with the knowledge and skills to gradually move up the growth ladder in their organisations or pursue senior -level positions in the social sector; but also understand the role of technology in their leadership journey.

The programme has taken shape with the joint support of Lal PathLabs Foundation in association with the IIMA Endowment Fund. The Dr Lal PathLabs Chair in Healthcare was instituted by Lal PathLabs Foundation in 2022. The core objective of the Chair is to carry out cutting-edge research that can further strengthen the collaboration between academia and industry, optimize the forward and backward linkages in the healthcare ecosystem and promote thought leadership in this domain.
