John R. Coleman, Ford Foundation, New Delhi, had written a letter dated April 29, 1961 stating that partnering with UCLA was a 'final' decision, after he realized that Vikram Sarabhai had reached out to Harvard. Sarabhai argued for the Institute's right to determine who its partner should be. Ultimately, IIMA partnered with HBS.

Kamla Chowdhry had played a key role in facilitating the partnership with Harvard even before she was formally appointed as Professor. As Professor and Coordinator of Programmes, she and Vikram Sarabhai (Honorary Director), and Professors Harry Hansen (Director, Division of International Programmes) and Warren Haynes (Ahmedabad Project Director) comprised the administrative team in the early years.
