Philip Borden (Marketing)

Professor Philip Summers Borden worked in the Marketing Area from August 1966 to September 1966.

He was born in El Dorado, Kansas in 1925. After a brief stint as a Sergeant in the US Army Air Force, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1947. Prof. Borden completed his MBA in 1950 post which he attained a PhD in Commercial Science in 1955-both from Harvard University.

He taught at Harvard and Northwestern University before being recruited in 1956 by Ohio based Huber Homes Inc. At the time, Huber was one of the Midwest's largest developers. A onetime Executive in Real Estate, Prof. Borden served variously as CEO, Executive Vice President, President, and Director of Huber Homes Inc during his 14 year tenure with the company. Prof. Borden was also a supporter and member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

He went on to hold several positions with major homebuilders and manufacturers in the Midwest, Washington DC, Florida, Chicago, and Southern California. Prof. Borden worked briefly with philanthropist Eli Broad during the 1960s in Los Angeles.

Prof. Borden eventually went back to academia as the Dean of the School of Administration and Management at the California Coastal University where he focused on advanced education for midcareer professionals.

In his later life, Prof. Borden committed himself to charitable work and civil liberties issues. He worked with the Carter Centre, the Jewish National Fund, the Ford Foundation, and the Unitarian Church. He was also active on a number of homeowners' boards and associations.

Prof. Borden authored The Marketing Process in a Large Industrial Organization (1954) among a number of publications. Prof. Borden believed that people must always be treated kindly and with respect. This quality helped him succeed immensely.
