Dr. V Krishnamurthy

Dr. V Krishnamurthy (1925-2022) was a leading Indian administrator and leader in the world of public sector management.

He was born on 14 January, 1925, in Karuveli in south India. He did a three-year diploma in Electrical Engineering from CNT Technical Institute in 1943. Following that he cleared the Union Public Service Commission examination and joined the Central Engineering Services in 1955. He studied at the Soviet Academy of Sciences where he got a PhD in Economics. In a management career spanning several public sector undertakings, he was the Chairman and CEO of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Maruti Udyog Ltd., Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), and Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL). Before he was the Chairman at IIM Ahmedabad, he was the Chairman of IIM Bangalore between 1982 and 1984. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1973, the Padma Bhushan in 1986, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007. He was also honoured with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in 2009, by the government of Japan. His autobiography, titled At The Helm, was published in 2014.
