Samrat Gupta

Biography

Samrat Gupta is an Associate Professor in the Information Systems area at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. 

He has been awarded research fellowship by the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He has also held the position of senior researcher at the University of Agder, Norway. His research projects have been funded by Slovak Research and Development Agency, European Union’s Horizon research programme, and Government of India's SPARC program. His research revolves around three key themes: network theoretic modelling, information disorder driven by social media, and user centered digitalization.

Samrat's work has appeared in leading journals, such as Information Systems Research (ISR), Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS), Decision Support Systems (DSS), Information Sciences (InfSci), Data & Knowledge Engineering (DKE), and Journal of Business Research (JBR), amongst others. He has shared his research contributions in leading conferences including HICSS, CIST, SCIS-IRIS, DESRIST, UKAIS, DaWaK.

He is serving or has served editorial roles at special issues of Information Systems Journal (SE), European Journal of Information Systems (AE), Journal of Strategic Information Systems (ERB). He has also served as program co-chair at the India Conference on Information Systems (InCIS), track co-chair at the Indian Academy of Management conference (INDAM), Associate Editor at ICIS, ECIS, PACIS, amongst other such editorial assignments.

He received his doctoral fellowship from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow and a bachelor’s degree from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.

Funded Research Projects

1) Fair and Explainable Data Valuation Mechanism for Utility Maximization in Digital Marketplaces (2025-2029):

This project is funded by Slovak Research and Development Agency. This project aims to address critical gaps related to fairness, explainability, and utility maximization in data trading ecosystems. Its originality lies in its comprehensive, domain-agnostic, multi-faceted approach that addresses the complexities of data valuation from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

2) Federated decentralized trusted dAta Marketplace for Embedded finance (FAME) (2023-2025):

This project is funded by European Commission's Horizon research and innovation program. FAME’s main goal is to develop, integrate, validate and offer as a publicly accessible service Europe’s first federated, decentralized, trusted and energy efficient data assets marketplace for Embedded Finance. FAME will offer access to a novel decentralized approach to keeping track of metadata and the lifecycle of data assets leveraging high-performance, energy-efficient permissioned blockchain technology. The project will implement a variety of trading and monetization schemes, integrated in smart contracts.

3) The Dynamics of Polarization and Formation of Echo Chambers: Insights on Cultural Products (2019-2023):

This project was sponsored by Ministry of Education, Government of India under the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC). The key objectives of this project were to understand the nature of socio-cultural controversies and formation of echo chambers around them, how echo chambers shape up the public perception of socio-cultural controversies, understand the temporal consequences of different types of controversies, understand why such controversies normalize over time and how their public reception varies.
